Dental sleep medicine is an area of dental practice that focuses on the use of oral appliance therapy to treat sleep-disordered breathing, including snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Dentists have a role in the use of custom-fit oral sleep appliances, an effective treatment that prevents the airway from collapsing by supporting the jaw in a forward position.

This course is designed to give participants:

  • An understanding of sleep and the importance of good quality and quantity of sleep.
  • An overview of sleep disordered breathing.
  • An explanation of how oral appliances work.
  • How to screen and assess patients.
  • How to manage them through a documented protocol of practice.
  • Select those for treatment in practice.
  • An overview of custom devices and laboratory requirements and procedures.
  • Demonstration of protrusive registration, device fitting and appliance evaluation.
  • Working as part of a multidisciplinary team of medical and dental professionals.
